I’ve been asked this question quite often, especially when we planted Redemption Hill Church where I serve currently as the preaching pastor. Why start Redemption Hill Church? I think the challenge in answering a question like this lies in navigating the pre-existing assumptions that lie underneath it. It may not sound all that intimidating on the face of it, but it is indeed challenging to give a sufficient response, at least to satisfy most of those who ask this question. You see, if we simply establish some points of difference and neglect to address those underlying assumptions, the question still remains mostly unanswered. What do I mean by that? Well, at the risk of sounding a little philosophical, let me examine the question itself for a moment. This question can be a direct one or an indirect one. If the intent of the questioner is to simply know the characteristics that make us different from any of the other local churches in the city, the answer seems pretty straightforward. But, on the other hand, the question may arise from a more fundamental discomfort, or distaste, in seeing a new church planted amidst a sea of existing churches, especially in the case where the questioner himself is a devoted church member of one of these other existing churches. In other words, the question that is really being asked is, “Why did you plant a church when you could have joined mine? What makes your church special?” Now, do you see my dilemma? So, let me address them separately.

THE SIMPLE RESPONSE

If the question is a direct one, where no underlying assumptions are being made on the part of the questioner, then my answer to that question will be equally direct and simple. I would begin by discussing our positions relating to theology, church polity, soteriology, evangelism, discipleship, membership and so on. In my experience, these discussions often seem to progress well and the questioner is able to either see sufficient differences we have with a particular church, or recognise conclusive evidences of God’s leading – in spite of similarities – that led to the planting of this church. Now, as a side note, I always try and avoid making a gross generalisation in the form of ‘most churches’ because it is never helpful. For even within such generalised categories that do exist, churches differ from each other on so many issues. Therefore, in these discussions, if you were to ask me how we differ from a particular church, I could maybe give you actual points of difference, if there are any. To add to that, if anyone were to go through our ‘Affirmation of Faith’ statement, a lot of the key positions we hold as a church can be clearly understood.

THE COMPLICATED RESPONSE

Now, on to the more difficult ‘indirect question’. What makes this question rather difficult to answer is that the ‘Affirmation of Faith’ or any other statement will merely scratch the surface and will not satisfy the questioner. He will, ever so often, filter it all in the light of his preconceived assumptions and see only what he wants to see. It is only natural. A common preconception in this regard among Christians I’ve met is that they believe that a new independent church plant is primarily a sign of rebellion. This is often how their thought process would go: I’ve been part of a church for quite a few years now and I am really happy where I am. Then, here comes along a new group of people who decide to start a new church when they could have simply joined mine (as it often seems to happen). Does this mean they think they are better, that they know better? Do you see what I mean? Following this train of thought, if someone asks me, “How is your church different from mine?”, what they really want to know is, “What makes your church any better than mine?”. The possibility of this kind of misunderstanding is reason enough for me to proceed with extreme caution whenever I have to answer this question. “Why? When you could have picked a needle from this stack of needles, why make your own? Is this a sign of rebellion? unwillingness to submit? pride? arrogance? immaturity or youthful folly?” Well, I must first admit that it is true that there are those who start churches for reasons such as these, but I can confidently say that such is not the case with Redemption Hill. On the contrary, I would go so far as to suggest sinfulness on the part of many who question our existence in this particular manner, not because of the question itself, but because of the unfair judgment behind the question that asserts that if we are a new church, it must be because of such foolish reasons. The sinfulness is on the part of the questioner if he has already decided for himself that all of this is pure folly and not a work of God, instead of giving his fellow Christians the benefit of the doubt and engaging them in healthy enquiry and discussion and maybe even debate. Such judgment, without any honest interaction to understand the real reasons, is, without a doubt in my mind, baseless and thereby sinful. So, how do I answer this question? Firstly, it is very important for us to understand that ‘different’ does not automatically mean ‘better’. It may, but it does not by default. This means that if you were to look at why we are different from your church, none of the points of difference is meant to communicate that we are better than your church in that matter. We may simply be different, and those differences may help this particular church to better fulfil the God-ordained duties required of any healthy church, sometimes specifically in the context of the group of people who have committed to gather here. In fact, some differences are purely practical, like having the service in English instead of Malayalam. This is a difference, and it is ‘better’ specifically for us, but it is nothing more than that. In these comparisons, I would argue that ‘better’ is the wrong word. The right word would be ‘healthier’. ‘Better’ is like a knife that stabs our ego and leaves us bleeding anger. Whereas, ’healthier’ conveys something a lot more honest. ‘Better’ often leads to a biased unhealthy confrontation and on the other hand, ‘healthier’ has an unbiased objective view of the situation and it leads to healthy discussions. It’s quite simple, actually. If you see someone better than you, you tend to feel inferior. Your ego is easily hurt. You may be motivated to be better, but often for the wrong reasons. Whereas, if you see someone healthier than you, it tends to inspire you. You may approach them to find out what they do to be healthy and you may even follow suit. Therefore, we at Redemption Hill take great care to remind our members to not look upon other churches as being lesser, but to be wise in realising that we can all be healthier in several aspects if we are intentionally pursuing them as we see it in the Bible, even though they be different from the practices or views of other churches around us.

THIS IS AN INTER-CHURCH DISCUSSION

John Piper, in a panel discussion at T4G, said that he defines preaching in a way that it can’t be bad. He points out that if preaching is done bad, then it isn’t true preaching. I’d apply the very same standpoint to the local church as well. If a local church is bad, then it simply isn’t a church. Now, I know that no church is perfect. Surely the Corinthian church was far from perfect. Yet, Paul persuades them to change their wicked ways and purge the evil one from among them. Listen to what he says in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11; Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. In other words, we were once bad, “such were some of [us]”, but in Christ we are new creations. The old has passed away and the new has come. And if the local church is the gathering of such sanctified men and woman, then it simply cannot be bad. But let me tell you what it can be. It can be unhealthy. Like we see in the Corinthian church, it can be objectively unhealthy, in the light of the Word of God. A church is not a gathering of the perfect. It is the gathering of those being perfected. So, when I say that a church cannot be bad, I do not mean that sin is absent. I mean that the church, as a gathering of believers, cannot exist in contradiction to the work of Christ. A church that denies the deity of Christ is not just bad, it isn’t a church. A church that denies the cross is not a church. A church that compromises on the inerrancy and sufficiency of scripture, that supports the mass murder of planned parenthood, that compromises on its stand against homosexuality, that exalts man-made traditions above the truth of scripture, that is drowned in the health, wealth and prosperity gospel – no such community can be called a church in clear conscience. Why am I saying all this? Well, because the topic of our discussion does not apply to such a community. If you are part of a community that has been founded upon the word of God, believing the true gospel it proclaims, then the existence of Redemption Hill need not disturb you in the least. We may rather shake hands, and observe and discuss the healthy aspects of our respective churches, all the while perceiving the unhealthy aspects as well, and by sharing, encouraging and learning from one another, we may grow faithfully as healthy congregations. But, if you are part of a community that denies the fundamental truths that form the Christian faith as prescribed in the Bible, then, by all means, say that the existence of Redemption Hill church is a shout of rebellion. It is a loving cry against such beliefs, in the hope that Christ would so shine His light in our lives and draw men and woman from the trap of such communities to the true gospel of Jesus Christ that we faithfully proclaim.

So to conclude, if you are part of a church, then the existence of Redemption Hill isn’t a claim to be better. It is primarily a decision taken in obedience to God who is leading us, and it is a consistent striving to be healthy. Hence, we may differ with your church in certain aspects and be united in other aspects, but we are on the same journey as you are, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory (Ephesians 1:14). We can even agree to disagree on these points.
Romans 12: 9-13 “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.”

Among God’s many blessings and means of grace on earth, fellowship with godly brothers and sisters is among the most fruitful. I’m sure that every single one of us has that brother or sister to whom we owe a lot of what we are today. Love for them is natural in that sense. We owe them as they have done so much for us. And love towards them, in such a case, is the natural response. But there’s something important and interesting about the love that the Bible talks about. It is something we can neither emulate from examples without nor generate through will within, but yet it is something that God expects from us. Furthermore, it is not enough that we have some form of love but we ought to have genuine LOVE as Paul puts it. Now, why would he ask us to have something that we can’t generate?

Paul hasn’t just asked us to have genuine love. In fact, by the time we read through Romans and reach chapter 12, Paul has already given us the means of Grace by which genuine love is generated. He gives us THEOLOGY. He gives us that which enables us to love God, God’s Word.

Paul gives us the gospel truth and teaches us to align our minds in accordance with that truth. Through his writings, he shows us how to “Seek first the Kingdom of God”. In Colossians 3:2, he says, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things”. So it is not enough that we learn the gospel truth that Paul imparts in the first 11 chapters, but he urges us to respond to them. “OUTDO one another in showing honor”, he says. He doesn’t just say show honor. That is not enough. But when he walks into the church, he expects to see brothers and sisters engaged in a race. A race not to show off wealth, not to boast of our assets, not to wear the costliest clothes, not to highlight one’s social status or standing. A race, rather, to show honor to one another. He paints the picture of a selfless man or woman who is consumed by love for his/her neighbor and puts a great deal of effort into honoring fellow brothers and sisters, ie, his local church. Paul doesn’t merely use the word love and then leaves it as it is, allowing for ambiguity on the part of the reader who interprets it. He explains what it actually looks like.

He says, “Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good”. Love is absent where deceit or evil is present. We can’t have this love in us if we hold fast to what is of the world. He recommends that we hold fast to what is good, hold fast to what God has provisioned for our edification. Hold fast to the teachings of scripture. While it is true that we can’t, by our efforts or by any means of the world, generate genuine love in us, the miraculous scripture can. The scripture most certainly can birth in us genuine love and zeal to serve our Lord.

Paul shows another implication of love within the local church. Being prayerful and patient in tribulation. We hold one another in prayer, we pray for the brethren in their needs and difficulties. But we don’t stop there. We don’t stop at praying for them, but we serve them. We contribute to the needs of the saints. On one end of the spectrum, we have mega-churches and false teachers who teach prosperity. They take immense amounts of money from their members and in return give them false hope. On the other end, we might have the tendency to be stingy people. The text isn’t just talking about money, although that could very well be one of the implications. Whatever it may be, men of God, let us be a giving people. Let us be generous in our giving to one another’s needs. Let us be those people who run to people in need and try to outdo one another in showing honour.

Here’s a portion of the church covenant that members of my Church uphold:

“We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love; to remember one another in prayer especially our leaders; to aid one another in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian compassion in affections and courtesy in speech; to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, mindful of the commands of our Saviour to secure it without delay and work to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. We also resolve to practice personal and family devotions; to educate and train our children in the Christian faith; to support the efforts of the church to prepare the next generation to put their confidence in God; to seek the salvation of our family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, acquaintances, and of all the world. We will contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor, the cause of reformation and revival, and the spread of the gospel through all nations.”
